PARATAXE presentation – Berlin spricht!

21 February, 2026 in Berlin, Germany

Berlin spricht! collaborates with Stadtsprachen – Magazin der internationalen Literaturen Berlins. In a joint PARATAXE event, we ask what languages Berlin writes in. PARATAXE is an event series where Berlin authors, who write in languages other than German, will be introduced and published in citywide conversations, readings and translations.

About

What languages does Berlin write in? Together with Stadtsprachen – Magazin der internationalen Literaturen Berlins and two literary guests, we explore the current city map of linguistic diversity in Berlin. The occasion is International Mother Language Day, a commemorative day proclaimed by UNESCO to “promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism”, which has been celebrated annually on February 21 since 2000.

A special literary evening in German – with sections in Galician, English and Nepali (and translations).

  • Elisabeth Verhoeven will present the Berlin spricht! language project.

  • Martin Jankowski will talk to Mara Mahía (author, Spain/Berlin) about Galician and Ioanna Gatzigianni will read her German translation of a prose text by Mara Mahía.

  • Nishan Dhakal (author, Nepal/Berlin) will talk about Nepali, and Nico Lehmann reads the German translation by Ritu Kuluju of a short story by Nishan Dhakal.

For details about the participants, see the PARATAXE event page.

We would like to thank the Tieranatomisches Theater for inviting us to its wonderful, listed rooms!

Admission €5 / reduced €3 (box office only).
